Our Beginning

The State of Education

In 2001, James and Phoebe were firsthand witnesses to the dire state of education in Nakyere village. Decades of political instability and inadequate management had led to overcrowded classrooms and severely diminished teacher morale.

Over the subsequent two decades, there has been a noticeable deterioration in students' academic performance within rural Ugandan communities. Dropout rates have surged, and the overall quality of education has suffered. The prevalence of hunger and financial strain on families presents substantial barriers. Consequently, many children have been forced to forego their education to support themselves and their families.

Lack of Resources and Expertise

In rural communities, most school-age children contend with limited educational resources and teachers lacking expertise. The shortage of competent head teachers and dedicated teaching staff further compounds these difficulties.

Consequently, rural schools often endure neglect and chronic under-resourcing, prompting young people to seek better opportunities in urban areas. However, this migration poses risks, as many end up homeless and susceptible to engaging in criminal activities for survival.

A Vision Takes Root

James and Phoebe responded to the village elders' request for a school by using their savings to construct a multi-purpose building that served as both a community center and a school. This building became a vital hub for community discussions and unity-building efforts. The story of Nakyere village serves as a call to action, inviting individuals to join in making a difference in the lives of its people and neighboring communities, with education as a transformative force.

Founding Years

"Education is a better safeguard of liberty than a standing army." – Edward Everett

Inception in 2006:

Inspired by their Christian beliefs and convictions, James and Phoebe, in 2006, started the Amazing Love School's kindergarten with an initial enrollment of 46 children and two committed volunteer teachers. We established the village's first kindergarten program to help young children who would otherwise be left unsupervised while their parents tended to gardens.

Our kindergarten, which serves children ages 3 to 6, operates from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., prioritizing a nurturing environment for early education and skill building. With dedicated teachers and essential resources, we aim to unlock each child's potential through education and skill development.

Growth and Progress:

Amazing Love School now serves over 440 children from kindergarten to primary seven, guided by a team of 15 qualified teachers and five support staff, benefiting a community of over 3,500 individuals.

With the generous support of  the Amazing Love Development Organization (ALDO) friends and supporters through donations and volunteering, we've inspired both children and the community, contributing significantly to our growth and positive impact.

ALDO is committed to addressing disparities and fostering a fair and inclusive society. We firmly believe that providing quality holistic education, decent infrastructure, and community support are crucial to achieving social justice for all.

Management of the School

The School Management Committee (SMC) and the Parent Teachers' Association (PTA) oversee the Amazing Love School in Uganda.

  • The SMC focuses on long-term improvements and necessary changes to realize the
    school's vision.
  • The PTA fosters open communication and understanding between parents and staff,
aiming to support children in reaching their highest potential.

The SMC and PTA play integral roles in educating illiterate parents, monitoring academic progress, and identifying community challenges and solutions, showcasing exceptional dedication to the school's mission.

Community Participation

Community Engagement

Pride in Development:

Our local community takes immense pride in the development of our school, viewing it as a collective achievement and a beacon of hope for the future. Their active involvement in various capacities, including construction, school infrastructure maintenance, and food provision, demonstrates a strong sense of community spirit.

During the challenging lockdown period, the community emerged as a steadfast partner in our efforts to navigate the complexities posed by the pandemic. They played a crucial role in our back-to-school campaign, assisting in announcing the reopening of schools while emphasizing safety precautions for parents and students.

The community's dedication extends to the upkeep of the school compound, where they diligently maintain the premises to ensure students have the necessary infrastructure for a comfortable and enriching educational experience.

Advocates for Children's Voices:

The community's remarkable contribution includes advocating for children's concerns and challenges that may hinder their ability to remain in school. The community has played a crucial role in fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment by actively sharing insights into students' obstacles.

ALDO appreciates and values the contributions of our local community. Their involvement embodies the spirit of collaboration and shared responsibility for the well-being and education of our children.

If our community's story resonates with you, we welcome your support. Together, we can continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of these children.
